The article of the Baikal-GVD collaboration has been published in the authoritative science journal Physical Review D. The first results of the search for astrophysical neutrinos based on the data accumulated by Baikal-GVD, the Baikal Deep Underwater Neutrino Telescope, were announced. The astrophysical neutrino flux earlier detected by the Antarctic Neutrino Telescope IceCube was confirmed. The Baikal Neutrino Telescope is one of the Russian projects at the mega science level. The Baikal-GVD Telescope was ceremonially launched in March 2021 with the participation of the Minister of Higher Education and Science of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov.
February 17. Day 1 Today, the Baikal expedition to construct the neutrino telescope has been launched. The first group of scientists and specialists under the guidance of Igor Belolaptikov have arrived at the 106th km of the Circum-Baikal Railway. May the ice be strong and the weather fine!
For over 20 years, the tennis tournament of the Cousins Dzhelepov has been held in Dubna. The cousins Venedikt Petrovich (1913–1999) and Boris Sergeevich (1910–1998) were avid for tennis, and they did a lot to promote it. Both were renowned physicists, corresponding members of the AS of the USSR and RAS, participants of the Atomic Programme of the USSR under the guidance of I. V. Kurchatov, outstanding science administrators, developers of research facilities, authors of many scientific papers. They graduated from Leningrad institutes. The son of B. S. Dzhelepov recalled that both cousins attended the nuclear bomb test on Novaya Zemlya and undersigned the final protocol.
The JINR Department of Innovations and Intellectual Property announces that on 12 January 2023, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research received a patent for the invention “Device to produce cold and ultracold neutrons”. The authors are Sergey Nikolaevich Dolya, a senior DLNP researcher, and Yuri Vasilievich Nikitenko, the leading researcher of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics. We congratulate our colleagues on being granted the patent!
From 17 February 2023, the regular expedition to construct the cubic-kilometer Deep Underwater Neutrino Telescope Baikal-GVD is getting underway at Lake Baikal. During about two months, the Baikal-GVD collaboration plans to install two new clusters of optical modules, three service buoy stations with calibration lasers, to develop further the system of data transmission via optical lines inside the facility, and also to lay two bottom cable lines of cluster power supply.
On 7 February 2023, at the session of the DLNP Dissertation Council, Evgeny Aleksandrovich Yakushev defended the dissertation “Application of spectrometric methods and low-temperature germanium bolometers for direct search for dark matter particles and rare processes” for the degree of Doctor of Physics and Mathematics in Specialty 1.3.15 – Nuclear and Particle Physics, High-Energy Physics.
In late January 2023, CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, hosted the meeting of the collaboration of the mega-science project DUNE. It was attended by scientists from the Experimental Department of Particle Physics of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems (EDPP of DLNP). At the meeting, the project status and different scenarios of accelerator upgrade to achieve desired results at the earliest possible date were considered. Also, plans were vividly discussed for processing and analyzing the first data from the prototype of one of the DUNE near-detector complex facilities at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab, USA), and also the data from the prototype far detector at CERN accumulated over previous years.
“After graduating from a nine-year school in the provincial town of Soligalich, he worked as an electrician for two years. In 1937, he graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in specialty Nuclear Physics. In 1937−1941, he served in the army, and in 1939, while being demobilized, he participated in the launch of the first cyclotron in Europe at the Radium Institute under the guidance of I. V. Kurchatov. In 1943, he was part of the group consisting of ten scientists headed by I. V. Kurchatov, the first staff members of a new nuclear centre Laboratory No 2 of the AS of the USSR (now the Kurchatov Institute). There were A. I. Alikhanov, G. N. Flerov and other renowned physicists in this group. In 1948, he was assigned a deputy director of the Hydrotechnical Laboratory of the AS of the USSR being established in Dubna, the future JINR Laboratory of Nuclear Problems which he headed in 1956. For over thirty years, he was its director.”

Mikhail Zarubin and Kirill Tarasov from the DLNP Sector of Molecular Genetics of the Cell were invited experts of a new episode of RIA Novosti’s popular science podcast “We all will die. But not for sure”. The lethal radiation dose for a human is 3 to 5 Gy, and a tardigrade can withstand radiation of 10 000 Gy. Which genes do allow this animal to survive such tremendous radiation, and is it possible to insert them into our DNA? How cellular machinery works, whether genes can be switched on and off, and how they can be repaired. JINR scientists explained us molecular genetics.
The results of the 2023 JINR Grant Competition for Young Scientists and Specialists have been announced. The competition is organized by the JINR Association of Young Scientists and Specialists. There are 16 staff members of our Laboratory among the grant holders.
