At present, the international experiment T2K, in which DLNP specialists participate, is upgrading the near detector ND280. In the future, the detector will become a constituent of the new Hyper-Kamiokande project.

The Director of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Vadim Alexandrovich Bednyakov was granted the Letter of Appreciation of the Governor of the Moscow Region. The award ceremony took place on December 23 at the JINR Conference Hall at the session of the JINR Science and Technology Council.

The book “Yulian Aramovich Budagov… promised to live 100 years” by Vadim Alexandrovich Bednyakov, the Director of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems, was issued at the JINR Publishing Department.The book was written to commemorate a gifted scientist, experimental physicist of a world’s scale, science administrator, professor Yulian Aramovich Budagov.

On December 3−10, 2022, in accordance with the Agreement on Cooperation between JINR, the Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University (KAMSU) and the Federal Research Center “Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences” (UGS of RAS) (Kamchatka Branch), the compact precision laser inclinometer (CPLI) was installed in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It was adjusted, calibrated and mounted by the JINR group – M. V. Lyablin, A. V. Krasnoperov and A. M. Kuzkin.

On December 8, the results of the competition for receiving the 2023 Bruno Pontecorvo Scholarship for Young DLNP Scientists were announced. The Scholarship went to Nadezhda Rumyantseva, a researcher of Sector 2 of Weak Interactions of the DLNP Experimental Department of Nuclear Spectroscopy and Radiochemistry. The DLNP Group of Scientific Communication talked to Nadezhda Rumyantseva about her work, experiments she is involved in and plans for the year as a scholarship holder.

A new species of extremophilic bacteria has been isolated by JINR scientists, along with their colleagues from INR of RAS, from subsurface water in an unused tunnel of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory of INR of RAS. The species is able to withstand high concentrations of heavy metals and to grow using C1 compounds as a carbon source. In the long term, this bacterial species can be used to purify soils and waste water from heavy metals and also to recover biomass using an inexpensive carbon source methanol.
