A regular Baikal Neutrino Telescope expedition has begun. This time the participants face an ambitious task of installing two clusters during the season and repairing failed parts of three earlier installed clusters. DLNP sent a considerable force to fulfill the task. Among the participants in the expedition is a DLNP Deputy Director Dmitry Vadimovich Naumov. Whenever possible, he will share his impressions, thoughts, photos, and videos with us. An exciting trip is in store! Join in!

Although I have arrived at the ice campsite on Monday, and it is Sunday today, the day I am going to describe is for some reason the fifth. Either I have started my journal a bit later, or I have lost a couple of days. It seems that the theory of relativity affects mysteriously our daily life. In any case, Saturdays and Sundays are working days here.
A joy is a feeling one can get after a day or two of hard work, after having realized that the entire string with all the modules has been deployed, and the system is functioning correctly. So far, during this expedition, the installation of one string required more than a day. To pull out the whole string during the day became a usual thing for expedition participants. To install a new one is outstanding.

Within the „Baikal Journal. Neutrino News from Lake Baikal” series, the new “Baikal GVD. Portraits” section is set to begin. It is intended to introduce our expedition members and explain their contribution to the construction of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope.
Aleksandr Doroshenko, a researcher from DLNP JINR, will be talking about challenges he is facing and his attitude to the Baikal GVD project.

Andrey Ivanovich Panfilov passed away in his sleep yesterday. A legendary person. He was about to become a theoretician and to deal with superstring theory. However, once he got the task to develop a particular piece of equipment for the Baikal neutrino telescope. As a matter of fact, he invented the most part of devices being used here up to now. His untimely decease shocked all of us. He has always been a very creative man of inexhaustible energy. Everyone continues to speak about him as if he were still alive. May the blessed memory of this wonderful man and scientist stay with us forever…
Meanwhile, the camp life is going on. Rastislav’s winch is out-of-service after all. The handle has been broken off. The welder from land has already come, and now he is going to weld the handle. Rastislav has already explained him the task.

On the sixth day God created beasts of the earth, cattle, creeping things and humans. But before it, in the beginning He made the light, the heavens and the earth, the firmament in the midst of the waters and the dry land, the seas, the stars, the Sun and the Moon.
Although we work tireless and hard, we are still infinitely far from the above-mentioned effectiveness.
Till now I described things I could see by myself, my own experience. On the ice we install the equipment. To have the opportunity to do this, all the devices had first to be invented, designed; their prototypes had to be produced, tested, put into production, delivered; a lot of details had to be taken into account.

There is a sacred custom among the people living near Lake Baikal. Before going onto the ice, one should “burhan”: to soften up the spirit of the lake. You can “burhan” while making an offering - after having poured a few drops of alcohol, you should say the right words. Moreover, even the person who does not believe in any spirits should “burhan” too. If one does not do this, he will face a problem soon. That is the fact.
Actually, I knew about this common practice, but I forgot about it, and on the day of my arrival, I just sipped carelessly at my beer on my way to the lake. The requital was unavoidable. Today, in the morning, I was cleaning the “maina”: hammering the ice and shovelling it out – that means, was doing the job corresponding to my current professional competence. Usual site works were being performed around me. Suddenly, there was a bubbling sound. After a while, I was following with eyes my own iPhone disappearing in the depths of the lake. It had slipped out of my pocket. A tribute to the spirit of the lake.
Meanwhile, things are running along. Our team has been given a task to pull out the three modules with electronics and cables from the central string of the first cluster, nicknamed “Dubna”. To pull out and to bring to the shore station. There, quick-witted technicians will examine them. Bair Shaibonov has given us an easy to understand explanation.

Dmitry Naumov: “I make amateur videos using just the camera of my mobile phone; I do not want to forget what is to be done and in which order. A real professional, a director from the channel “Rossiya-24” works nearby. His name is Misha Zhukov. After he had heard, that I had drowned my mobile phone, he kindly agreed to go around the ice campsite and to record what was happening there in the evening. Immediately after supper, he made a short film from all our recordings. Did you enjoy it?”

The weather has suddenly changed from mild to severe. “Gornyak”, a wind from the mountains, arose, it started snowing. Yesterday, the east-shore mountains were perfectly seen. Today, we cannot even see the shore we have come from. And this is only 3.5 km away from the ice camp.
Perhaps you remember heavy city wind which occurs on sunny days around tall houses. It happens because the sunny-side air warms up quicker than that of the shadow-side. The difference in temperatures forces the warm air haste towards the cold one, and there comes the wind! Baikal is surrounded by quaint-shaped mountains. Here, in the gorges of the Baikal Mountains, we observe the same processes as in a city, but many times stronger.
