Establishment of tardigrade laboratory lines at JINR as a basis for studying the molecular principles of radioresistance and cryptobiosis
This summer, staff members of the DLNP Sector of Molecular Genetics of the Cell selected tardigrades (Tardigrada type) from the environment of the DLNP site and now they are cultivated in laboratory conditions. These organisms have already become model ones for studying cryptobiosis, conducting research in the field of radiation biophysics, cosmic biology, and studying effects of physico-chemical stress factors.
Tardigrades are one of the most radioresistant animals both in active state and cryptobiosis. Moreover, among the animals they have a unique ability to survive under space exposure without UV shielding. These and other extremely radioresistant organisms are actively studied in leading acceleration centres in Chiba (QST HIMAC), Lanzhou (IMP), Darmstadt (GSI), and others.
