Congratulations to Uladzimir Kruchonak on the Successful Defence of the Candidate Dissertation!

On 28 December 2021, at the session of the DLNP Dissertation Council, Uladzimir Gennadevich Kruchonak defended the dissertation “Studying radiation hardness of high-resistance gallium arsenide to use in particle detectors at future lepton colliders” for the degree of the Candidate of Physics and Mathematics in Specialty 01.04.01: Instruments and methods of experimental physics. Our congratulations to Uladzimir on the successful defence of the candidate dissertation! We wish him further success and bright ideas, scientific achievements, and the right solutions!

News in Pictures. Prague. Van de Graaff Accelerator

Upgrade aimed at a significant increase in accelerator neutron beam polarization is being performed at the Van de Graaff accelerator in Prague along with our colleagues from the Czech Technical University. Scientists from the DLNP Sector of Low Temperatures (SLT) under the guidance of the senior researcher Yuri Andreevich Plis are actively involved in the upgrade.

The leading researcher of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems G. A. Chelkov has shared his memories about Aleksei Alekseevich Tyapkin. Today, it is the 95th birthday of A. A. Tyapkin. We go on commemorating him along with his colleagues and family.

Academician Yuri Tsolakovich Oganessian has shared his memories about Aleksei Alekseevich Tyapkin. — In 1953, after my third year at MEPhI, I was sent to the Hydroengineering Laboratory, a secret physics laboratory in Dubna, to get some work experience. I was trained at the Sector of Mikhail Silych Kozodaev, in the group of Aleksei Alekseevich Tyapkin. He was my supervisor. Since that time and till his last days, we were in such relations – he is my supervisor, I am his student (laughing).

Today, it is the 95th birthday of Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Aleksei Alekseevich Tyapkin. He, a renowned scientist, sportsman, and public figure, was also a talented narrator. Twenty-five years ago, a while before his 70th birthday, his memories “My Way to Physics”, where he recollects the events which influenced him and brought him into science, were published in the weekly newspaper “Dubna: Science, Community, Progress”. This is what he wrote at that time: “On the eve of my 70th birthday, I decided to share memories with readers of the weekly newspaper “Dubna” about remote events of my youth which influenced the course of my life and pushed me into the most intriguing research area. Of course, the narration is full of personal experience, but I believe it will be the point that will arouse readers’ interest. Moreover, some of the revelations make sense only in the author’s narration. I’ll try to highlight those rare cases where I was forced to make decisions on my own which later predestined my life.”

This year, 26 December marks the 95th birthday of Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Aleksei Alekseevich Tyapkin. It is no exaggeration to say that this name is known to every inhabitant of Dubna. Who of us did not sledge or ski from the highest “hill” in Dubna, Tyapkin’s Peak? Aleksei Alekseevich was a dynamic personality and caused great changes in science, sports, and social life of our town. Let us, along with his family and colleagues, commemorate our countrymen. Igor Alekseevich Tyapkin, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, leading LHEP researcher, talks about his father.  

Vladislav Sharov Is a Laureate of the 2020−2021 JINR Prize for Early-Career Scientists and Specialists

Vladislav Sharov, a researcher of the Sector of Research Methodology of the DLNP Experimental Department of Particle Physics, has won the Second Prize in the category “Methodological and Technological Research” in the competition for the 2020−2021 JINR Prize for early-career scientists and specialists.  

The MONUMENT Project: Measuring Ordinary Muon Capture to Check Nuclear Matrix Elements of Double-β Decays

The MONUMENT project is aimed at experimentally measuring muon capture on several daughter nuclei (in relation to candidates for the neutrinoless double beta decay). These measurements are of significance to verify the accuracy of theoretical calculations of nuclear matrix elements. The group of DLNP scientists, along with their European colleagues, submitted an application for measuring muon capture on several isotopes at the Meson Factory of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. The application was considered and approved by the PSI Program Committee. The beam time was provided for the research in 2021 with a further programme at least for three years.

New Release of the Cartoon “Baikal Seal and the Mystery of the Lake”

The Laboratory of Popular Science Animation of the School for Young Film-Makers of the Tregubovich Children’s and Youth Film Festival (https://tregubovich-bogotol.vsite.biz/) has completed its final work, the animated film about the Baikal Neutrino Telescope “Baikal Seal and the Mystery of the Lake”. The screenplay of this fascinating cartoon was created by Dmitry Naumov, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, DLNP Deputy Director, and Natalia Mazarskaya, translator and editor from our Laboratory. Many thanks to young cartoon makers from the boarding school for gifted children “Cosmonautics School” (Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai), Lesosibirsk Military School (Krasnoyarsk Krai), non-profit Media Studio “Cool Skills” and to their teachers!

“Influence of Structural Defects of Lutetium Oxyorthosilicate on Optical Properties of LYSO crystals” by V. A. Kalinnikov

The electromagnetic calorimeter of the COMET experiment will be manufactured using LYSO crystals. When developing calorimeters using scintillators based on lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO crystals), problems arise associated with the strong scatter of the light yield, both for different crystals and along the length and volume of an individual crystal.
