K. E. Smirnov (JSC) “D. V. Efremov Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus”

In JSC “D. V. Efremov Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus” (Saint Petersburg) a design for a new optimized SS-18P cyclotron has been developed. It is intended to produce proton beams with an energy of 18 MeV and a design current of 150 μA. The previously developed cyclotron complex SS-18/9, equipped with an external injection system and an armored electromagnet with a vertical median plane, was taken as a basis.

The main objective of this project was to optimize and simplify the design of the cyclotron in order to make it compact, simplify the design, and optimize manufacturing costs.

The SS-18P cyclotron has a horizontal median plane and an internal ion source. The upper through-holes in the electromagnet valleys house the tanks and rods of the RF resonators. Diffusion pumps evacuate the vacuum chamber through four through-holes in the lower yoke and pole of the electromagnet. The vacuum chamber is limited by the pole size. Four target devices are installed in close proximity to the cyclotron. Optionally, one of the target devices can be replaced with a short transport path and a remote target station specialized for irradiating solid targets. The technical design for the SS-18P cyclotron complex has been developed.
