“Chronograph. Time’s Witnesses: Basar Mukhitdinovich Sabirov”

An interview with the research scientist of the DLNP Sector of Rare Processes Basar Mukhitdinovich Sabirov.

B. M. Sabirov graduated from the Faculty of Physics of the Tashkent State University. In 1966, he was assigned to JINR first to take a practical course for his graduate work, and then as a trainee.

In 1969, he proposed an experiment on the precise muon mass measurement using meso-X-ray radiation measured with the crystal-diffraction spectrometer. In 1969―1975, he studied mesoatomic and nuclear processes with Ge(Li) detectors.

Since 1976, he as the leading experimentalist had been involved in studies of the influence of space flight factors on mineral composition of animal organisms on the satellites Kosmos-605 and Kosmos-690 (along with the Institute of Biomedical Problems). For these studies, B. M. Sabirov was awarded the JINR Prize.

In 1981, B. M. Sabirov proposed an experiment on the search for monopole excitation of nuclei during the decay of the bound muon on the K-orbit of a muonic atom. The experiment was carried out with the strong support of the Academician Bruno Pontecorvo. The upper limit of the probability of this process at the level less than 5∙10-3 was obtained with the muon beam of the accelerator at the Leningrad Nuclear Physics Institute (Gatchina) with the participation of colleagues from this institute.

In 1989―1991, he took part in experiments on studying fission of heavy nuclei using muons at the University of Bonn (in the group of Prof. P. David along with S. M. Polikanov). In 1992, he was included in the list of authors of the D0 experiment performed in cooperation with Fermilab.

From 1998 to 2001, he acted as the head of the JINR group at Fermilab and was directly involved in the D0 experiment. In 2002, after coming back from the USA, he participated in the TUS/NUKLON astrophysical experiment. And since 2005, he has been in the ILC project being performed in cooperation with JINR, Fermilab (the USA), INFN (Italy), the Russian Federal Nuclear Center ― All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics (Sarov), and the Paton Institute of Electric Welding (Ukraine).

Since 2008, he has been involved in the Russian-Japanese project COMET, leading the activities on development of the experimental facility for manufacturing straw tubes to be used in the coordinate system of the experiment.

He was awarded the medal “Veteran of Nuclear Industry” and several JINR Prizes. He holds the title “Veteran of Labour”.
