“Virtual Prototyping of a Cyclotron” by Oleg Karamyshev

Details
Category: Seminars
Published: 08 February 2023

Virtual prototyping is a modern design method based on CAD technologies. Virtual prototyping involves working with a prototype of the entire accelerator, from the early stages of development to manufacture. An integrated platform created in MATLAB encapsulates the calculations of individual cyclotron systems (in CST Studio) and provides a mechanism for their interaction, which contributes to the creation of an optimal cyclotron.

In late January 2023, CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, hosted the meeting of the collaboration of the mega-science project DUNE. It was attended by scientists from the Experimental Department of Particle Physics of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems (EDPP of DLNP). At the meeting, the project status and different scenarios of accelerator upgrade to achieve desired results at the earliest possible date were considered. Also, plans were vividly discussed for processing and analyzing the first data from the prototype of one of the DUNE near-detector complex facilities at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab, USA), and also the data from the prototype far detector at CERN accumulated over previous years.

In 1937, he graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in specialty Nuclear Physics. In 1937−1941, he served in the army, and in 1939, while being demobilized, he participated in the launch of the first cyclotron in Europe at the Radium Institute under the guidance of I. V. Kurchatov. In 1943, he was part of the group consisting of ten scientists headed by I. V. Kurchatov, the first staff members of a new nuclear centre Laboratory No 2 of the AS of the USSR (now the Kurchatov Institute). There were A. I. Alikhanov, G. N. Flerov and other renowned physicists in this group. In 1948, he was assigned a deputy director of the Hydrotechnical Laboratory of the AS of the USSR being established in Dubna, the future JINR Laboratory of Nuclear Problems which he headed in 1956. For over thirty years, he was its director.”

“High-Energy Neutrinos from Blazars: Three Years Later” by Alexander Plavin

Category: Seminars
Published: 16 January 2023

The recording of the DLNP seminar “High-Energy Neutrinos from Blazars: Three Years Later” given by Alexander Plavin on December 22, 2022.

The evidence for bright radio blazars being high-energy neutrino sources was found in recent years. Specifics of how and where these particles get produced still remain not fully determined. We test and refine our earlier findings on the neutrino-blazars connection by utilizing a total of 71 track-like high-energy IceCube events from 2009-2022.

Mikhail Zarubin and Kirill Tarasov from the DLNP Sector of Molecular Genetics of the Cell were invited experts of a new episode of RIA Novosti’s popular science podcast “We all will die. But not for sure”. The lethal radiation dose for a human is 3 to 5 Gy, and a tardigrade can withstand radiation of 10 000 Gy. Which genes do allow this animal to survive such tremendous radiation, and is it possible to insert them into our DNA? How cellular machinery works, whether genes can be switched on and off, and how they can be repaired. JINR scientists explained us molecular genetics.

Joint Project of DLNP and the Komikadze Group

There is a wealth of ways to explain something. The main thing here is to be heard and understood. How to communicate science and make it clear and entertaining? Especially at the time of information superfluity when the brain tries to protect itself from unnecessary information with all its might, when internet users do not read texts any more, but just scan through them.
