Today, the Kamchatka School on Elementary Particle Physics and Related Topics in Paratunka village, Kamchatka Federal Subject, begins its work. The School was initiated by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in association with the Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University and the Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radio Wave Propagation FEB RAS.
The main goal of the School is to introduce undergraduates, postgraduates, young researchers and physics teachers from Kamchatka to both cutting-edge investigations of microworld physics and the science being advanced at JINR; to present prospects of cooperation; to establish contacts and launch collaborative projects with scientific organizations from other regions of RF. Introductory lectures on elementary particle physics, neutrino physics, application of elementary particle studies in geophysics and astrophysics make the core part of the scientific programme. Guest researchers from JINR and other Russia’s scientific institutions, eminent specialists in various fields of knowledge will hold these lectures.
The opening ceremony took place in the health resort “Zhemchuzhina Kamchatki” (“Pearl of Kamchatka”). The audience received a welcoming speech by Minister of Education and Youth Politics of the Kamchatka Federal Subject Aleksandra Yuryevna Korotkova; Rector of the Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University (KamSU) Irina Nikolayevna Khokhlova; Deputy Rector of Science, Innovations and International Cooperation KamSU Veronika Nikolayevna Yefimenko; Director of the Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radiowave Propagation FEB RAS (ICRR) Yuri Valentinovich Marapulets, and Co-chair of the School Organizing Committee Igor Ivanov (CFTPIST, DLNP JINR).
Among the School participants, there were physics teachers from St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow, Nur-Sultan (Astana), Mirny (Arkhangelsk Region); undergraduates and postgraduates from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Moscow, Nalchik, Dubna, and St. Petersburg.
The first workday started with the lecture “Elementary Particle Physics” by Igor Ivanov (CFTPIST, DLNP JINR); Dmitry Naumov (DLNP JINR) went on with his lecture “Neutrino Physics”; Igor Boyko (DLNP JINR) followed him with “Experiment in Particle Physics”. The end point of the day was a talk on the science at JINR given by Dmitry Naumov and Nikita Sidorov. That all sounds a bit formal and official, but you should have seen shining eyes of the School listeners, have heard a vast number of questions asked during discussions to realize that the first day of the School was a success.
